Chatter-ers

Women like to talk. Little boys create noises with banging cars, revving engines, and crashing towers of blocks. Little girls want noises that convey their thoughts to others, and they tend to develop verbally ahead of their male counterparts. Girls cluster in small groups from elementary school through college to exchange their thoughts with others about their day, their feelings, the latest rages, and their strange, but interesting, male counterparts. Girls become women, and the talking gene is still very much alive. Women can long for conversation, long and detailed accounts of their ordinary, deep and intimate interchanges of soul mates, or the light and simple chatter that brightly colors their interactions with others. Even those with a quieter demeanor express their words in journals or diaries. Why are we this way? I believe a big part of the "why" is that we want to be known, we want to be loved, we want to be accepted and valued, and we want to encourage and nurture others. It’s simply a part of who we are, and talking is a way to express that unique part of us .

In our Bible study group we discussed different aspects of prayer, but the concept that seemed to surface the most frequently was the idea of being a "chatter-er." We do it so easily with our friends – why not let our desire to talk carry over into our relationship with God? The concept allows prayer to become very natural and spontaneous. It allows me to share all of my day and all of my thoughts with the greatest friend I will ever have. Cell phones and email are great, but the freedom of access to God, is unsurpassed! Prayer does not require a defined posture, time, or even a particular kind of need – God just likes to hear from us! And if I am in "chatter-er" mode, I can be who I am, and know I will be unquestionably known, loved, accepted, and valued. Prayer that simply thinks of a friend and then talks to God about her, encourages and nurtures that friend! Or, it may be a child, a spouse, or a parent who would delight in knowing my love for them, also prays for them. Chatter-ers talk to God while they’re stuck in traffic, rocking fussy babies, doing laundry, pulling weeds, or waiting at the dentist’s office. And sometimes their prayers are sudden outbursts of praise for their Creator God, their Redeemer, their Provider, and their Friend!
